Death toll rises to 41, over 100 still missing in landslide in India




MUMBAI: As local media reported on Friday, death  tolls to 41 people and about 100 people still missing in Indian’s landslide which crashed on Wednesday. The landslide happened at a village near Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. During June to Septermber, landslides are common in many parts of India.

The landslide hit 40 homes in the village while the people were sleeping on Wednesday while they believed that 100 missing are being trapped under the debris. The landslide only left slush, mud and debris. It was reported that, a portion of the mountain had come down to the village with cause a stronger impact to the ground.

Even though the rescuers are working hard even at night trying to recover the dead bodies and find for the missing victims, yet they are being slowed down by heavy rain and strong winds. Rescuers find it hard to reach the submerged roofing and bricks of the houses in the Main affected area.


National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) commandant Alok Awasthi  said that his team is trying  their best, but with every passing moment the situation is taking a turn for the worse. It is not easy to get off the ground as the soil is very soft due to rain and deforestation.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the situation as “saddening” because of  the loss of lives in a landslide in Pune. He noted that  Home Minister Rajnath Singh would be going to see the spot to take a look at the situation.
